Baking at Someone Else’s House

I have been with my family for the holidays. Of course I brought my sourdough starter with me! I baked two different times and both times the oven failed at my mom’s house. The igniter was going out on their oven. The oven was 100 degrees cooler than I needed it to be…bad news! So my dad got a new igniter and I decided to try again. I made up a batch of basic white sourdough using 100% starter, you can find the recipe here.

I then added some chunked cheese to one loaf, because believe it or not, there are people in my family who don’t like kalamata olives!

Then I added chopped rosemary and kalamata olives to the second loaf, because my sister who was baking with me, is allergic to milk. So no cheese in her loaf.  In my loaf, I put kalamata olives, cheese and rosemary… I got the best loaf in my opinion!

I did not weigh the extra ingredients (the cheese chunks, olives and rosemary) we just added what looked good.

The loaves turned out great, so now I feel like I can bake again. I am thinking about what to bake next…

My dad and me at Christmas 2010:

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone!

Hi Teresa ~ Happy New Year to you and those you love.
What a lovely picture of you and your Dad…heartwarming!
The bread looks absolutely fabulous…all with ingredients I love.
I’m new to bread baking and scared to death of “sourdough starters”… I’m only at the ‘biga’ stage as I only bake bread about once a month.
If I was 30 years younger, I’d love to work in a bakery and learn to bake all types of bread from a professional baker … what a thrill that would be. As it is, I’m a retired lady and truly appreciate people like you that are willing to share their hard work and expertise with beginners like me that would love to learn the basics and experience the joy of baking our own bread from scratch. Thank you for all you do Teresa.
    Sincerely, Barbara in Toronto

Wow! How do you eat all that bread and stay so thin? Amazing!

Hi Angela, two things. I ride my bike and I give away most of my bread…. I am happy and my neighbors are happy.
